Woman in Innovation: Bec Cuzzillo
"Tell your inner mean girl where to go and show up as if it's a sure thing – because it is."

Each Wednesday we interview women in our community about innovation and what drives them to make a difference in their industries everyday!

What are you working on?
Last year saw me leave the world of 9-5 and step into life as a full-time entrepreneur, so the word that comes to mind at the moment is expansion. What started as a side hustle, has now grown to be my everyday and this first part of 2018 has seen me really step things up a notch.

I am currently pouring my heart and soul into my new goddess coaching program. After running women’s workshops for over 18 months, I decided at the start of the year to take this work into the more intensive one-on-one space. It’s a program for women who are ready to step into their power, stop making excuses and start creating the life they know they deserve. This is the work that gets me excited – seeing women let go of their inner mean girl and transform their lives for the better.

Other than that, I’ve been in full-on creation mode for a few months now – putting together new online programs, collaborating on workshops with other local creatives and creating new candles. Creating beautiful candles is where it all started for me, and I am super excited for some of our new releases coming up. We’ve been working with a local artist on a collaboration candle and I can’t wait to share it with the world later this year.

Why is innovation important to you?
For me, innovation is about progress. It is taking what we have now and making it better. It is about questioning the status quo and pushing the boundaries of what we think the world should be like. With innovation front and centre, there is no space for excuses like, “that’s just the way it is.” With innovation, there are endless possibilities. There is hope.

Innovation inspires us to strive for something more, to be something more –
constantly evolving, transforming, learning from our mistakes, and trying something new. Without innovation, we’d be stuck. And no one likes being stuck.

What drives you to make a difference?
This is such a big question! And there are so many things I could list here, but at the heart of it, I think it comes down to justice and equality for me. I am so grateful for the privilege that I’ve enjoyed my entire life, but for me, that privilege comes with a responsibility. A responsibility to use my position, my skills and talents, my unique magic and medicine, to contribute to a more equitable world.

Do you have any advice for getting more women into the innovation ecosystem?
Just do it! Don’t wait until you “feel ready” or your website is perfect. I see fear and self doubt holding far too many women back from living their passion and purpose. There’s a reason “fake it til you make it” is a saying. My advice – jump straight in, tell your inner mean girl where to go and show up as if it’s a sure thing – because it is.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help, surround yourself with people that support you and find a community of fellow entrepreneurs. Some of the best work that I’ve ever done has been in collaboration with other creatives that I love and admire. Getting to co-create cool stuff with cool people is the absolute best!
