Each Wednesday we interview women in our community about innovation and what drives them to make a difference in their industries everyday!
What are you working on?
We make hip hop music, and we’re really honing in on it at the moment – trying to polish & finesse it until we feel like it’s ready for the world (or the world is ready for it!).
We’ll hopefully be releasing some tracks that we’ve been working on some time next year.
Why is innovation important to you?
Music is all about innovation. Artists are constantly creating, experimenting, and pushing the boundaries in order to learn more about themselves and the world around them.
For us, it’s part of how we express ourselves, so it’s important to us because innovation is a huge part of identity.
What drives you to make a difference?
Heaps of things! Seeing how prevalent both injustice and inequality are, and knowing that making music is a platform for giving a voice to those issues. Hip hop is inherently about social movement and empowerment, so respecting that aspect of the genre is important to us.
Being female in a male dominated industry is a big one too. We’re hopeful and excited for a future where it’s not unusual to have more than 25% of a music festival bill as female artists. We find that using humour is a great way of giving commentary to these kinds of issues and getting people to listen.
Do you have any advice for getting more women into the innovation ecosystem?
- Use your community! Often you’ll be surprised by how willing people are to help if you reach out. Go to events, message people on social media,
- Know your worth! We’ve had a tendency to undervalue ourselves in the past. It’s a hard habit to break, and you have to really practice. But it’s so important!
- Don’t be scared to be bad at stuff. There’ll be a period of time where you wonder if you’ll ever get better. But don’t be discouraged or lose perspective of what you’re working toward. You can do it!
